Tapping the middle mouse button a few times cleared the status and normal operations resumed. Perform this step once the check disk repair process is complete. It exhibited the same problem as described here and was worked around with the CTR+ALT+DEL method. When I booted back up, it turns on and hangs on the Dell screen with the progress bar just past the 1/3 point.
The HDD from the failed GX280 seems to be fine and he has some irreplaceable apps on the system. I guess if the mouse is doing this on a laptop, it would also affect the touchpad buttons not working or vice versa.
